I hope, few of beginner photographer would have hardly heard this word Photography Gel ever? Because gel sounds something liquid foam and how a photographer can add a liquid thing to the photography's equipment or photography. Even I understood the same things in the beginning but when I see this gel physically then I understood it clearly. let's understand this GEL how someone can add this gel creatively to the photography.

Photography Gel- It is a transparent coloured film plastic sheet or transparent material.   Which modify the lights, create dramatic lights for photography and cinematography. It is placed on the light source to create creative light effects, There are two types of gels.
  1. Colour Correction Gels and non-corrective - Color correction is the technique of matching and balancing colours throughout your film. It is used when you are shooting with multiple light sources and you need to correct the light to get the balanced and better shots.
  2. Colour effect gels - Gels are transparent coloured material used to modify lights for photography, video and theatre. Light is projected through the gel to create coloured effects in the scene being photographed. Create a drama through different colours gels especially in theatre. This gel is used to create a mood, atmosphere in the photographs. A great tool to add on the beauty.
It's a coloured filter like another lens filter. This filter can be fit easily on the strobe light and other flashguns or other light sources. Different gels are used to create different shots for photography or as per the scene requirement. This requires an aesthetic sense of photographer to use the gels.

These coloured films are available in different shapes and sizes, different colours as per your shoot requirements. There are available at cheap prices too. Start using this gel and see the miracles.

The purpose of these gels are, convert your strobe white lighting into coloured lighting through the coloured films. You see the different and creative lights on your models, products, portraits etc. But using these gel will definitely help your creativity, will enhance the quality of photographs, will give you the 3D effect too if you use 2-3 different or multiple coloured gels.

Not only gels are used for products, portraits & models photography but sometimes I use the blue gel when I travel and I do not find the blue sky. I placed it half on the lens so that I capture the sky area in the blue. It is up to you how you use these gels to shoot creative so that your final shots speak more loud and clear to your viewers.

I would like to mention in this article, This a boon for all the photographer who believes in creating something different for their photography, especially in portrait and products. For those who wanted to upgrade their photography level. Last but not the least we’ll be honing in on the use of colour-effect gels.

Keep experimenting and have wonderful and happy photography to you all.
