What is JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and GIF Files?

This article is not directly related to capturing images or photography but indirectly related to photography. This article is very important for all professional photographers. They must know about these file formats for delivering better results. Moreover, beginner photographer must have this information before they proceed to serious photography career because finer nuances knowledge always contributes to achieving something great and better.

In electronic media or photography, there are few file formats exist to transfer your file/photographs for a specific reason, These file formats are called JPEG, PNG, TIFF & GIF. Every file format serves a different result as per the requirement of the purpose. These purposes can be like this printing, website, catalogue, graphical, storage, social media, ad banners, animation, infographics etc. Every purpose required a different file format to use or to deliver better photography results.

The quality of your photographs, animation, banner, infographics, print media etc that all influences the perception of you and your corporate brand. How to present your image, how your images should be looked that all depends on the file format. 

Let's discuss in little in details 

JPEG - A universal format out of four formats. This file format used for the Web, Advertising, social media, blogs etc, But this format compresses the original files. You can convert 20 Mb file into 2-3 MB file to use further but the quality of the photograph will be dropped or downgraded. use it cautiously It should not spoil the image for further use. Please never use Jpeg Images for editing, line-based graphics and the printing purpose. It supports a full spectrum of colours, and almost all devices and programs can open and save to the JPEG file format

PNG - This file format is quite a small image that maintains the original quality and its transparent. It is used for Charts, Diagram, logos and a small photo. Please never use this format images for WEB and social media etc. PNG files support millions of colours, plus varying degrees of transparency — so they’re perfect for graphical images

GIF - This file format is very small out of this four format, a simple graphical image with limited colours. These images are used for the Ad banners, simple charts, animation, web buttons etc. Never use it as photographs or detailed imagery purpose. It is also good for fast loading visual. Mobile users use Gif images to entertain.   

TiffTIFF is the best files format for any bitmap images that you intend to editThis file format is used for editing and storage purpose, means storing the images for future editing purpose with new technology. Never use for web purposes. Tiff files preserve for the best quality imagery purpose, it is never compressed. Tiff mostly used to make tags, layers and transparency and compatible with photo manipulation program like photoshop. Tiff is best option to edit your digital images in working storage format.

Which format you like to choose to depend upon the requirement. All the four formats may be required depending upon the specific requirement, you need to understand into deep to produce better imagery output.
