What is the focal length? the most basic question, or basic thing to understand in the world of photography but we never ever try to understand or read about the focal length, Every beginner photographer has a different definition of the focal length. They hardly understand this focal length. Few of my students or friend always ask this question, what is the focal length in the photography. They assigned me one important topic to write.

Let's discuss the focal length to understand the basics of photography.

The focal length is the distance between the image sensor and the subject when focused subject to shoot. Means you have focused subject at the distance of 18mm, 50mm, 105mm, 100 mm, 200mm or less, That all is called the focal length.  I hope you must have noticed the focal length stated on the outside of the lens like 18-105mm, 18-55, 70-200MM ETC. It means the minimum or maximum focal length distance. You will find this focal length informations, minimum and maximum length on all the lenses, all the makes of lenses. It's quite easy to understand what is the minimum or maximum focal length between the Camera sensor and the lens.

An increase or decrease in the focal length also changes the angle of view, scene perspective, framing, etc. Like shorter the focal length (10mm,11mm,18mm) will give you wide-angle, more content to shoot. Whereas longer the focal length (105mm, 200mm, 300mm) will give you close shot, large subject, tight framing, Blurred background, etc.. Please keep things in mind also. The whole image can be changed once the focal length is changed while shooting.

I advise, Whatever lens you have, Prime or Zoom lens. Start capturing the same subject at different focal lengths like 18mm, 30mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 120mm, 150mm, 200mm etc and compare all the shots together and see the difference and find the better focal length shots.

For being a better photographer, Having Basic knowledge is quite important and then your photography will be blissful for you and others.

Keep experimenting and Have happy photography to you all
