Group Photos Tips

I am sure, your friends, the family must have ever asked to shoot group photos and If you are shooting professionally then there is also a requirement of the group photos. But, I tell you the shooting a single model portrait little easy as compared to shooting group photos.

Handling one male/female model's costumes, make-up, background, expression, a composition for the portrait shoot is quite easy as compared to handling group of humans, everybody's body posture is different from each other, everybody dressing sense or dress is different from each other, everybody face expression is really different from each other. In short, group photography is a difficult task to handle to get one perfect photograph.

It is a nightmare when you post-process the image and found one person's expression is really silly and the whole photo is scrapped and RESHOOT is really painful for all the professional photographers.

Let's discuss the group photo tips if you are shooting professionally. What are the important things are required to shoot a group?

Clothing- When shooting group please ask your client or group to wear bright & light dresses like Blue trouser/jeans with a white shirt/T-shirt, Light coloured formal with the Tie. Always remember brighten colour dresses always gives a bright better group image. Please avoid dark clothing, colourful dresses. Choose one colour combination or official dresses.

Background- When you are shooting a group photograph then It is highly difficult to shoot inside the office, home, building etc, Even the backdrop does not work inside. the best option is to find a better background outside. Avoid wires, scratched walls or any disturbing element in the background that can spoil the group photos. Hunt for the neat, clean and interesting background like the sky, office building (if interesting) etc

Lighting- Never make the group stand opposite the Sun because sunlight can make them squint, closed eyes etc. Keep the sun behind them to shoot get a good background and light. Must use flashgun, strobe lighting, bounce lighting to shoot them. Avoid direct sunlight, harsh light etc.

Composition- Always try to compose the good shot, never shoot the full-length photos of the group, shoot them above the waistline, shoot the face with the chest. because we have to shoot faces and has to capture interesting faces photograph. Avoid full-length photos.

Expression- Expressions made the good group photo, observe closely everybody's expression before the shoot and after the shoot in case if you found someone's face dull, out of the group or spoiling image then Reshoot immediate otherwise one single person can spoil the group photo. remember. Avoid silly facial expression.

Setting- Never ever shoot the group at a wide aperture (f/2.8, F/4, F/5, etc) keep the narrow aperture or small aperture (f/9, f/11, f/16 etc) this also depends upon the number of people in the group. Focus the centre person to shoot and make sure this centre person must be the client, CEO of the company or another high-level person.

Summery- Make everybody comfortable in the group, be friendly with them to take out the better facial expression. Must explore great background along with the good lights.

Keep experimenting and have wonderful and happy photography to you all
